The Pros and Cons of Carpet Floors

Are Carpet Floors The Best Choice For Your Remodel?

The decision about what type of flooring will work best for your home depends on several factors — personal taste, lifestyle, ease of care, etc. There’s no question that a good quality carpet can enhance the beauty and comfort of your home, but it’s always a good idea to look at any investment in your home from both sides. Suppose you prefer the idea of a carpeted bedroom, for example. What are the pros & cons of carpet floors?
Pros
• Carpeting is soft on your feet and pleasant to walk on (especially in bare feet!).
• It’s warm to the touch and visually warms the look of a room as well.
• It’s flexible — depending on style and material, it can give a room a casual look or a formal look.
• There are lots of color choices available, so you can coordinate to walls or furniture if you’d like.
• Carpet comes in a variety of textures and styles to add interest to your room’s overall style.
Cons
• Carpet can stain if you spill something on it, although stain resistance varies by material. You can also buy carpet treated to resist staining.
• Seams can show if the carpeting isn’t properly installed.
• Carpet tends to show a wear pattern more than hard surfaces do.
You can mitigate some of the cons of carpet flooring by hiring a carpet professional to install your carpeting instead of trying to do it yourself or hiring a handyman to do the job. You can also either select stain-resistant carpeting or have a stain-resistant treatment applied. As for the issue of wear, you can use carpeting in areas with more limited traffic or rooms where you’re not likely to be trudging through with boots, like your living room, dining room or bedroom. Stick to easy to clean, wear resistant materials like tile in heavily traveled areas such as foyers, hallways and kitchens.
